Happy Mother’s Day.
It happens when a father realizes he doesn’t just love his daughter, but also her wife. It happens when a soldier tells his unit that he’s gay, and they tell him they knew it all along and they didn’t care, because he was the toughest guy in the unit. It happens when a video sparks a movement to let every single young person know they’re not alone, and things will get better.
It happens when people look past their ultimately minor differences to see themselves in the hopes and struggles of their fellow human beings. That’s where change is happening.
And that’s not just the story of the gay rights movement. That’s the story of America—the slow, inexorable march towards a more perfect union.

I don’t usually go in for calling people on their cultural biases, but LATIN? Common foreign language? French? You know there are more people on the planet that speak Wu, Marathi, Telugu and Javanese EACH than there are French speakers? Never mind Mandarin, SPANISH, Hindi, Arabic, Bengali, Portuguese, Russian, Japanese and Punjabi?
None of the Wikipedia entries on this seem particularly reliable, but according to the list of total numbers (not native or first language) speakers, French is number 5. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_languages_by_total_number_of_speakers. Which makes sense if you think about Africa.
Also that seems to be some sort of general category. I’m sure it also includes Mandarin and Spanish.

So, we saw the Hunger Games today and it was, I don’t know, not great. But not terrible either? People who hadn’t read the book were severely traumatized by it, while those of us who had weren’t. [ … ]
I’ve been thinking about why this was so…
When I explained to some friends last night what this was about, they had no idea.
Having read the books, I liked the parts in the Games most because they seemed to fit what I had imagined (and had the least plot ellisions) while the parts at the Capital and certain characters (Donald Sutherland is too much of a sweety to be President Snow) were not at all what I pictured.
The single least-attractive attribute of many of the people who download content illegally is their smug sense of entitlement. —

Yes, content silos are frustrating, but he really should’ve used an example other than Game of Thrones for that comic about how horribly difficult it is for conscientious consumers to pay for content [the oatmeal] because it is really pretty easy and not all that expensive to just pay for HBO, which comes with the pretty awesome HBOGO library.

Everyone likes things that are free, but that doesn’t make stealing okay. Would you walk into a store and walk out with a pair of pants because you didn’t like the terms under which they were being sold? Some people would. They are thieves. So do people who download illegally.

This is a penguin named Roast Beef. A therapy penguin. Named Roast Beef.
If I had a therapy penguin I could die because I would be so happy.
I stayed up late to watch the drama of downton! My lord! I just can’t get enough.
LOVE Downton. But those lawyers for Bates were awful.
OMG cute. How did that cat even get up there?
